Air conditioners and heat pumps both have two coils, one for the outdoor unit and one for the indoor unit. These coils are the pathway from outside to inside and back again for the refrigerant to cool your home during cooling season. Whether it is an AC or a heat pump, there is a coil in the outdoor unit. If you have an air handler, the coil is built into it. If you have a furnace, the coil is a separate piece (often referred to as an 'A coil' because of the shape of many of them). Please note that if you have to replace an outdoor unit that is less than a 13 seer unit, you will also have to replace the coil because of the need for an expansion valve to accommodate 13 SEER.
